Living the heroic life: This is why its difficult to raise virtuous children in today’s culture

Do you struggle with your kid's choices?

This week I’d like to continue the series we are have on Living the Heroic Life.

We have covered thus far how we are all in a STORY and how there is a BATTLE to fight.

One thing I’d like to remind us all, is how each one of us is being ATTACKED, one way or another.

It may not feel like it all the time, but the more we are striving to live a heroic life, the more we are under Satan’s crosshairs. This includes our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

As St. Peter writes, “Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour” (1 Peter 5:8)

Unfortunately often when we try to lead a holy life, Satan will in turn attack those we love the most.

And just to be clear, this doesn’t mean an attack like something in the Exorcist movie.

Most of the time it is much more subtle.

It could be as simple as a book or comic book series that your child gets into, but then takes an unfortunate turn that has a specific agenda behind it.

Or it could be a popular TV show that every kid is watching, which subtly influences your child and begins to distance them away from the Church or your family.

Or it could be a YouTube video that pops-up in your child’s feed that sends them down a dark path.

The attacks are real, and there is someone behind.

If you feel like you are trying to do everything you can to influence your children or grandchildren in a positive way, but nothing is working, it may be the fact that you are currently in a spiritual battle.

If we are being honest, the culture that we are living in right now is antagonistic to the Christian faith and if we want to raise little heroes, it’s not going to be easy.

What we need is a BATTLE PLAN, and the resources to fight on a spiritual plane against the enemies trying to rip apart our families.

We need to, “Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world” (1 Peter 5:9)

In the next installment of this series, I’ll cover some ideas that the Church and her many saints have given us that can lead us to VICTORY!
