Included in our Phantom Phoenix comic book series is a new character named, Josephine Wilson.
Josephine Wilson is a trailblazer on the Chicago Police Department. She is enlisted to help patrol the back alleys and streets, finding lost children, and helping protect homeless women and girls from the recent rise in crime. She starts to suspect corruption among her fellow police officers, but nobody will listen to her.
Then her world is turned upside down when she runs into a mysterious vigilante who is in need of her help.
Similar to The Phantom Phoenix, there are many historical figures that have inspired us in the creation of Josephine.
For example, Grace Wilson, the first African-American female police officer in the Chicago Police Department during the 1920s. Also, Alice Clements, a female detective with the Chicago Police Department during the 1920s, sometimes called the “Female Sherlock Holmes.”
Here is a newspaper clipping that shows how Alice wasn’t afraid of confrontation!
She stopped a street corner riot with her drawn revolver! Not something that was typical of the time period!
Furthermore, Josephine is also inspired by St. Josephine Bakhita, a slave from Sudan who was bought by an Italian man and later won her freedom. She stayed in Italy and became a religious sister, becoming widely known for her holiness.
We look forward to introducing you more to Josephine in our new comic book series!
A crowdfunding campaign for this series will launch on Tuesday, February 2!
