Continuing our series on the history of Voyage Comics, I’ll have to admit that the first few years were pretty rocky. I had no idea how I would convince the world that they needed more Catholic comic books in their lives.
It’s one thing to create a product, and its quite another to try and sell a product.
I’m probably the worst salesman in the history of humanity and I’ve never really been an “influencer” on the weird thing called the “Internet.” Some people can start a YouTube channel and be an overnight success, while others (namely me), will start a company and only attract a handful of followers.
So I really had to trust that God was guiding the ship. In many ways, the fact that Voyage is still around 8 years later is a miracle. I lack all charisma or ability to convince people to buy something. If Voyage is successful, it has absolutely nothing to do with me!
What I didn’t expect during those initial years was a message from Holy Cross Family Ministries, asking if I’d be interested in creating a comic book about their founder, Father Patrick Peyton. I had not even thought of partnering with other organizations to create comic books and so this message was truly out of nowhere.
It ended up being a very fruitful experience and after that point, I knew God wanted me to create comic books about heroic holy men and women, especially those who are being considered for canonization.
At this point we were in the midst of the Finnian Series as well as the Mission of Joan of Arc. In addition to the saint comic books, I wanted to pursue the creation of a new superhero.
Creating The Phantom Phoenix was another one of those surprises, which I’ll share next week in Voices of Voyage #4!
