How Voyage Comics was born

Last week I gave a little background behind my own journey to writing comic books, and this week I’m continuing that thread, explaining how I founded a company.

I’ll be honest, I’m not much of a “business” guy. I’m a creator (co-creator, really), and I’d much rather brainstorm new ideas for comic books than deal with paying sales tax. The thought of being a founder and CEO of a company was not one of my childhood dreams.

Yet, I am a man of action. I can’t sit around and do nothing.

After a successful Kickstarter for what became Finnian and the Seven Mountains #1, I knew there was potential for more and that there was a big gap in both the Catholic publishing world and in the mainstream comic world.

One of the motivating factors behind the founding of Voyage Comics was the reality that mainstream entertainment has consistently favored the “anti-hero;” a hero who really isn’t a hero. Instead of fighting for justice out of a desire to be a good person, the hero “accidentally” does good deeds, and only because they benefit him in a selfish way.

What’s even more frustrating at times is the fact that the vast majority of mainstream media (especially comic books) overly sexualizes women, portraying them in ways that harm the purity of the consumer.

Instead of inspiring people to lead heroic lives, modern entertainment has eroded our sense of morality and is leading us down a much darker path.

On the flip side, the Catholic publishing world barely has anything for children ages 8-18 and even if they do, it’s mainly concerned about sacramental preparation. The idea of “Catholic entertainment” is a foreign idea and most Catholic publishers don’t get anywhere near it.

So in 2018 I did what I felt God was calling me to, form an entertainment company, rooted in Catholic values, to inspire young and old to lead lives of heroic virtue.
