The Captain’s Log – 005

Welcome back to this week’s edition of “The Captain’s Log!” This week I wanted to take a step-back and take you all “behind-the-scenes” at Voyage Comics.

As I have related in a number of podcasts and interviews over the past few years, I never intended to start a comic book company. Initially all I wanted to do is make a “single” comic book called “The Last Monks of Skellig Michael.” I later gave that name to my non-fiction book about the monks on that Irish island and instead named the comic book series, “Finnian and the Seven Mountains.” This was due in large part to the influence of Jim Fern, a veteran artist from Marvel and DC Comics. He helped us see the larger picture and lay the groundwork for an ongoing series.

Shortly after we released the first issue in the Finnian Series, I decided to found an actual company, called “Voyage Comics & Publishing.” Initially it was just me as the founder and sole owner. I wore every single hat possible, from writing, to business, to marketing. After about a year I took the advice from a trusted advisor and started to look for other people who shared my vision and wanted to see it grow. Michael LaVoy, the primary artist for the Finnian Series, joined me in this venture and over the past year a few others have come in and out, offering their talents to our company.

In particular, Jay David Ramos joined our creative team in 2020 and has become a primary artist for our titles as well as an editorial consultant. He has a wealth of experience behind him with Marvel, DC Comics and Disney, to name a few. His artistic creativity has helped us craft beautiful comics and compelling stories.

At the same time, to be completely honest, it has been a struggle juggling the “business” side of Voyage Comics. The three of us are very capable of producing amazing and inspiring comic books, but we have little experience in dealing with such areas as finances, marketing and general operations.

The good news is that our business is growing. Our sales have been steadily increasing each month over the past year and more families are discovering the world of Voyage Comics! It has been a great blessing and we are excited at the potential! Unfortunately, we can’t do this alone. We need more help. I am not even talking about financial help, but people who are passionate about our mission and who have the skills we need to grow this into the next Marvel Comics!

We know it’s crazy, but that’s our dream.

Except, the difference is that our comics and stories are not driven by the culture. They are driven by what is true, good and beautiful. Plain and simple.

We are sick and tired of offensive media and politically correct agendas. Why can’t we just make good, positive media that our kids enjoy, that also bridges the generational divide and appeals to even parents and grandparents!?!

The great thing about our comics is that I have heard about such a wide variety of people who enjoy them. From Australia, to Ireland, to the United States, people from around the world are excited about our stories. They keep asking for more!

If you want to pitch-in and help us grow, and believe in our mission, don’t hesitate to contact us! At the moment we are not looking for manuscripts, artwork, or story ideas. We have plenty of those. What we are looking for are people, passionate about our mission, who have the skills we don’t have.

Grow with us and we can make something beautiful!

Until next week!

Godspeed,

Philip Kosloski
